Travel App
This project deals with creating sitemaps, IAs, and user flows for mobile & web. The task was to craft a unique user experience for the chosen category. Detailed Information Architectures and user flows for web and mobile platforms were developed after carefully analyzing existing industry leaders' sitemaps. This project familiarized learners with the research of competitors' sitemaps and clear, structured thinking for IAs and user flows across the web & mobile.
Skills & Tools Covered: Information architecture, sitemaps, competitor research, user flows, mobile apps, web apps

Site map
This is the site map for the travel website Kayak.com. This site map provides a well-organized view of Kayak.com’s structure, highlighting the primary services, secondary features, and important user-centric sections. It allows users to navigate travel booking tools quickly while ensuring access to relevant resources.
Information Architecture for a travel website
I chose the web to create my IA. Using the web to book trips offers advantages in terms of visibility, multitasking, ease of input, and access to detailed features. Since the website provides a more comfortable trip-planning experience, I decided to create the IA for the website.
User flow for a travel website: Planning and booking a complete trip itinerary
This user flow for planning and booking a website trip itinerary provides an end-to-end process, from trip inspiration to booking and managing an entire trip. Users can seamlessly plan and confirm their flights, accommodations, and activities by following a structured path, creating a well-organized and efficient travel experience.
User flow for a travel app: Planning and booking a complete trip itinerary
This user flows for planning and booking a trip itinerary via an app that prioritizes ease of use, mobility, and speed. By reducing the number of taps and making essential information easy to access, the app ensures users can plan and manage their trips effortlessly while on the go.
Key Achievements
Designed a Comprehensive Sitemap:
I created a well-organized sitemap that helped visualize Kayak.com’s structure, ensuring users could easily access key booking tools, flight information, accommodation options, and support services.
The sitemap clearly distinguishes primary services (e.g., flight booking, hotel reservations) from secondary features (e.g., travel guides, customer support) to ensure intuitive navigation for users.
Developed Information Architecture:
I carefully structured the IA of the website, considering user needs such as visibility, multitasking, and ease of input. This involved organizing features and content into logical sections, improving the user experience for those planning their trips.
I focused on creating a seamless flow of information so users could effortlessly navigate through different phases of the trip booking process, from inspiration to finalizing bookings.
Created User Flows for Web and Mobile:
Web User Flow: I designed a detailed user flow that mapped the entire journey of planning and booking a trip on the website. This flow ensured users could move from discovering travel options to making their final bookings with minimal friction.
App User Flow: I optimized the flow for the mobile app for speed and convenience, making it easy for users to complete their bookings with just a few taps. The app version was tailored to provide quick access to key features, allowing users to plan and manage their trips on the go.
Learning and Insights:
Understanding User Behavior:
One of the key takeaways from this project was learning how users engage with travel websites and apps. I had to understand the pain points and challenges travelers face while booking, such as information overload and navigation difficulties.
By prioritizing simplicity, clarity, and speed, I was able to design a more intuitive experience, especially for mobile users who need quick, actionable information.
The Importance of a Clear Hierarchy:
Whether it's the website’s IA or the mobile app, I realized the importance of having a clear hierarchy in the content and structure. Without proper categorization, users can feel lost and frustrated.
My experience reinforced the importance of a well-organized IA, especially for websites with many content and services. A good IA should allow users to quickly understand their options and proceed to the booking process without feeling overwhelmed.
Mobile Optimization and Design Challenges:
Designing for mobile platforms taught me about the unique challenges of small-screen real estate, limited input (touch gestures), and the need for speed. I had to streamline the process to minimize the taps required to complete a booking while ensuring that all necessary information was easily accessible.
I also learned the value of adaptive design: the mobile flow had to maintain all the website's core functionalities, but it needed to be optimized for users on the go.
User-Centric Design Thinking:
I continually refined my design approach throughout this project by focusing on user goals and needs. I learned to think critically about how each decision impacted the user experience, from simplifying navigation paths to prioritizing important features at every trip planning and booking stage.
Collaborative and Iterative Design Process:
Working on this project allowed me to practice iterative design, continuously testing, refining, and improving my solutions. It reinforced the importance of gathering feedback from real users and making data-informed decisions.
Challenges Faced and Overcome
Balancing Complexity with Simplicity:
One of the biggest challenges was handling the complexity of Kayak’s offerings (e.g., flights, hotels, car rentals, etc.) without overwhelming the user. I had to strategically organize the content so that the site and app felt user-friendly while offering a wide range of options.
Ensuring Cross-Platform Consistency:
Another challenge was ensuring consistency between the web and mobile versions of the user flow. The same basic structure had to be adapted for both platforms, considering differences in interaction patterns and the amount of content users could view.
Impact and Results
Enhanced User Experience: By simplifying the navigation and creating a more structured IA, users could more easily discover and complete their bookings, leading to a more positive experience on the platform.
Increased Conversion Rates: Streamlining the booking process, especially on mobile, likely increased user engagement and improved conversion rates, as users could quickly finalize their travel plans.
Improved User Retention: A more intuitive flow and organized content kept users engaged throughout the process, making it easier for them to return for future bookings.
